Vote certification set for Nov. 19

URBANA — Despite a ballot filled with numerous contested races, levy requests and statewide issues, Tuesday’s election posed few problems for Champaign County officials on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

A day after the election, area officials were back at work preparing for the next step. The vote is scheduled to be certified at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Overall, there were no major issues, said Robin Burden, director of the Champaign County Board of elections.

She said she was not aware of any voter complaints, and there did not appear to be anything out of the ordinary.

“We’re just starting to canvass our election so we’re ready for certification,” she said.

While there were a few close races, Burden said it isn’t clear whether any races will need to be recounted until additional ballots are reviewed. Burden said officials still need to count provisional ballots that were cast in the election.

She said the final, unofficial results were counted shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. The results may have been available sooner, but election staff had to count more than 900 write-in ballots in a race for Urbana’s school board. In that race, only one candidate was on the ballot, but three others ran for seats as write-in candidates.

In that race, incumbent Jim Arter received 2,345 votes while Alyssa Dunham and Mark Bloemhard won seats with 373 and 285 votes, respectively. Joseph Timm received 192 votes.

Burden said voter turnout was around 43 percent, which was what election officials had projected before the election. She said that was fairly typical for this sort of an election.

About 112 poll workers assisted voters throughout the day, she said.
