TREMONT CITY — Nearly 3 percent of the residents of the Village of Tremont City are running for local office.

The community has an estimated population of 350 people and 10 candidates — two for mayor and eight vying for four city council seats — on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Voters will have the chance to meet the candidates at an event held Sunday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. at the village’s Park Building, 113 E. Main St.

Clifford L. Allen, Jayne Athey, Larry Blevins, Vicki Blevins, Steve Heider, Mark J. Hunger, Ryan Pequignot and Jeffrey A. Thompson are running for city council.

Current Mayor Tony Flood is running for re-election and on the ballot, his opponent will be David Shaw.

But a petition that Shaw recently submitted to detach his home from Tremont City will most likely render his candidacy null and void.

The resolution to detach 1.5 acres at 334 N. Mulberry St. from Tremont City to German Twp. was approved by village officials and then by Clark County commission.

Clark County Board of Elections Director Mark Oster said his office has contacted Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner about the issue.

Oster said the BOE was not contacted regarding Shaw’s petition.

It’s too late to pull Shaw’s name off of the ballots, which has already been printed, he said. Instead, votes for Shaw would not be counted.

“I think it’s pretty cut and dried,” Oster added. “If you’re not a resident of Tremont City, you can’t be the mayor.”

Shaw declined to comment.
