URBANA — The three members elected to the Urbana city school district board said they were happy with Tuesday’s election and are ready for work.
Jim Arter, an incumbent and the only member of the board who was on Tuesday’s ballot, said he was pleased to be elected to serve another term on the board. He said he is ready to get to work, and noted the district is doing well, but is facing financial issues like many other districts throughout the state.
One issue he said may come up in the future could be new school buildings in the district. While many other districts throughout the state have been able to build new facilities, that has not yet been the case in Urbana.
However, Arter also said a large project like that would need to be carefully considered, and is just one of the issues the district may face in the coming years.
He said he has enjoyed working with community members, staff and faculty in the district during his first term on the school board.
He also said he was ready to go to work with the district’s superintendent, as well as the district’s new board members.
“I’m sure that we will sit down and talk about the direction we would like the district to go,” he said.
Alyssa Dunham, who was elected to the board as a write-in candidate Tuesday, said her first job will be to get acclimated to the position.
On Tuesday, she said her computer crashed so she was busy texting friends and relatives about the election results.
“I’m going to sit here and text everyone I can think of,” she joked.
Mark Bloemhard, who was also elected as a write-in candidate, said he was impressed that more than 900 voters paid enough attention to the race to remember to vote for write-in candidates. It was Bloemhard’s first election.
“I think it was quite a humbling experience and hopefully I can live up to everybody’s expectations,” he said.
