Incumbent state Rep. Ross McGregor fought off a primary challenger and will be the Republican nominee in the November election for the Statehouse seat to represent the 72nd Ohio House district.

McGregor, R-Springfield, received 4,959 votes while challenger Ethan Reynolds received 2,004 votes, in final unofficial results for the Republican primary race on Tuesday, May 4.

McGregor said he’s pleased to have won the primary. Some people told him he didn’t have to worry about his challenger.

“But I take every election very seriously,” he said.

He will now face Democrat Greg Krouse in November.

Krouse, a Springfield City Schools teacher and Clark State Community College adjunct professor, was unopposed on the primary ballot after Richard Spangler dropped out of the race earlier.

An executive at Pentaflex Inc., McGregor was first appointed to the seat in 2005 and then elected in 2006 and 2008.

Reynolds is an 18-year-old Tecumseh High School senior and first-time political candidate. He didn’t return phone calls from the Springfield News-Sun on Tuesday night.

A Teaparty activist, Reynolds has said McGregor isn’t conservative enough.

McGregor, though, said the strong voter support he received in the primary is a clear mandate from the Republican base in his district.

He complimented Reynolds on his enthusiasm and running a spirited campaign.

“I hope that he will remain engaged in public service,” McGregor said.

After taking a short break to spend with his wife and family, McGregor’s attentions will turn soon to the November race.

The district is a swing district and one of the most competitive, he said.

“That will be a real challenge, as it is every November,” he said.
