Champaign County’s Union Twp. was one of the few local agencies that asked voters to approve new or increased money with their levies Tuesday, Nov. 3, and voters approved the request 413 to 364, according to Tuesday, Nov. 3, final, unofficial results.
The township was nearly alone in both Clark and Champaign counties in seeking a replacement levy, which keeps the millage the same but applies it to new property values, increasing the taxes slightly.
The township sought a five-year, 2-mill road and bridge levy.
“We were kind of worried, but we passed another one a few years ago when things were kind of rough,” said Union Twp. Trustee Jim Virts.
This was only the second time in 28 years the village has requested a levy that was not a renewal, he said. The new money will allow the village to complete the final two roads in a 10-year resurfacing program.
The only other Champaign County levy that asked for new money, the Johnson St. Paris Fire District five-year, 2.5-mill levy, was approved 566 to 451.
All other levies in the county were renewals and all but Woodstock village passed.
