A woman who fatally shot a man this week said Friday, March 12, the shooting was an accident.

Timothy Ratchford, 50, was reportedly shot in the chest around 6 p.m. Wednesday at his home at 25 E. Liberty St., according to a police report.

An argument between Ratchford and Christina Knight led to the shooting, Knight and officials said.

“(Police) received a call from a female who said she had been assaulted by a male and that she shot him,” said Capt. Mike Hill of the Springfield Police Division.

Knight was questioned by police, but Hill said Thursday no one has been charged.

In an exclusive interview, Knight told the News-Sun that she didn’t mean to kill Ratchford.

Ratchford and Knight lived together at the Liberty Street address “off and on,” Hill said, adding that there have been disturbances there before.

“The police division had been at that address on past occasions,” he said.

A handgun was found in the home, Hill said.

Knight had facial injuries when police arrived at the house, according to the report.

It is unknown if there were any other people in the home when the shooting occurred, Hill said.
