PLEASANT TWP. — Deputies still mourning the loss of one of their own less than two weeks ago settled a 90-minute stand-off with an armed man Thursday afternoon without incident.

William L. Ooten, 69, of 9910 Broadgauge Road, allegedly shot at his wife during an argument Thursday at the couple’s home, said Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Gene Kelly. She then fled the home from the back door and went to a neighbor’s house to call authorities around 3:15 p.m.

Ooten barricaded himself in the home and refused to come out, said Kelly. He did not fire any more shots.

With the sun quickly setting, deputies decided to enter the home through the back door and were able to “quickly overpower and subdue” him, said Kelly.

Ooten has some health problems and had an oxygen tank; he was transported to the Clark County Jail by medical squad.

The department is still recovering from the Jan. 1 shooting death of Deputy Suzanne Waughtel Hopper, who was killed by Michael L. Ferryman, said Kelly. Ferryman then died in a gunfight with officers, wounding German Twp. Officer Jeremy Blum in the process.

Kelly called Thursday’s resolution “the best possible outcome.”

He said deputies were familiar with Ooten, who had several guns in the home and a “stockpile of ammunition.”
