SPRINGFIELD — Urbana police are investigating events involving an 87-year-old man found severely injured in his home, Police Chief Matt Lingrell said.

The man was found in his home in the 500 block of Dorothy Moore Avenue and then flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton on Tuesday morning after a friend found him injured in his home.

The victim, who police identified as Louis Taylor, was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.

Police spent much of the day searching for the victim’s 2006 Jeep Liberty, which was found at about 3:30 p.m. outside a Long John Silver’s restaurant on South Limestone Street in Springfield.

Bruce Evilsizor, an employee at the restaurant, said he first saw the Jeep when he arrived at work shortly after 9 a.m. When the vehicle was still parked on the lot at 2:45 p.m., employees took the keys, which were still in the vehicle, and rolled up the windows. They then called police, although Evilsizor said employees were not aware of the incident in Urbana.

Authorities also collected a couch from the home as evidence.

One neighbor last reported seeing Taylor on Monday afternoon, said Lingrell.

Tony Justice said he and a group of friends, including Taylor, have coffee together every morning. But Taylor hadn’t shown up on Monday or Tuesday.

Justice on Tuesday morning went to the home, where he said the victim lives alone, finding the garage door up and no car there. Another friend thought it was suspicious that the garage door was open, so he also came over to the home and then found Taylor injured inside.

“His car’s not here and we’re not real sure what happened to him,” said Justice.

Lingrell couldn’t describe Taylor’s injuries, but said he was conscious when he was found.

His injuries didn’t appear likely to have come from a fall and may have occurred in the home, Lingrell said. Authorities spoke to Taylor only briefly Tuesday, because he was not in a condition to be interviewed, Lingrell said.

Despite his age, Taylor is active and frequently seen riding his bike in the neighborhood or driving with his dog, Rags, said neighbor Anna Hess.

“That’s his little companion,” she said.

Taylor was a long-time resident of Urbana, who once operated High Hopes Farm on Dugan Road with his late wife, B.J., said Justice.
