The owners of a local deli said they are essentially back to normal just a few days after burglars stole thousands of dollars worth of items including cigarettes, as well as deli meats, hams and whole turkeys.

The burglars broke into the Crown Market on Ohio 41 early Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, just a few days before one of the store’s busiest days of the year. Authorities are still investigating the case.

Deb Digioia, who owns the store with her husband Mic, said suppliers and customers have been supportive in helping the business get back on its feet. Despite the burglary Tuesday, she said employees opened the store only one hour late that morning.

Suppliers began delivering new products shortly after the incident, and Digioia said the business is 100 percent back in stock.

“They did an incredible job responding,” she said of the suppliers.

The store offered a pizza special from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, allowing customers to pay for their pizza based on the time they ordered. She said customers packed the store’s parking lot.

“It was the best response we’ve had for a pizza event,” she said.

Digioia said the crime was particularly heinous because she believes the thieves intend to sell the food they stole.

“These were people that not only took more than it is possible to eat, they had the intent to resell it,” she said.

Many of the deli items stolen were Walnut Creek brand, which is not a common brand for the area, she said.

She said if an individual is selling large portions of meats and cheeses from that brand, it might be a giveaway that the items were stolen.
