MECHANICSBURG — A Champaign County grand jury recently indicted a contractor accused of stealing $21,000 from an elderly Mechanicsburg couple, state and Champaign County officials announced Friday.
Terry R. Langston, 61, previously of Jacksonville, Fla., is wanted on a charge of theft from the elderly, a third degree felony, following a collaborative investigation by the Ohio Attorney General’s office and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.
A warrant for Langston’s arrest has been issued by the Champaign County Common Pleas Court. Langston’s current whereabouts are unknown.
Investigators allege Langston took more than $21,000 from the couple to pave their driveway, spread a thin layer of crumbling asphalt, then cashed the couple’s check and fled town. He is also wanted in Kansas for a similar scam, they said.
“Stealing from people is bad, stealing from the elderly is worse. The attorney general’s office will work with law enforcement and prosecutors anywhere in Ohio to find those people and put them in prison,” said Assistant Attorney General Ryan Stubenrauch.
Stubenrauch was appointed special prosecutor in the case by Champaign County Prosecutor Nick Selvaggio.
It is the 12th indictment statewide in investigations by the Consumer Protection Section of the attorney general’s new Economic Crimes Division, Stubenrauch said.
