SPRINGFIELD — The Rev. Leslie Fox said she is more than happy to help the needy in her community.
Instead she found burglars helped themselves to what was inside the church twice in one week.
The Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, 712 N. Fountain Ave., had copper piping for its air conditioning units stolen Jan. 20. On Thursday, staff members found someone had gotten into the sanctuary, stealing a $900 keyboard, amplifier and several microphones.
Empty stands and cords mark where the church’s contemporary band would normally set up for Sunday worship. The church is in the process of installing a security system. Fox said she feels sorry for the thieves.
“Our heart goes out to all those people who don’t have enough resources. That’s the definition of poverty,” Fox said.
This isn’t the only theft issue on Fountain Avenue recently. Several weeks ago, burglars removed all the copper piping from a home next door to the church. Christopher Humphrey said someone stole the catalytic converter from his truck.
“The community has got to get involved,” Humphrey said. “If you see a problem it’s not snitching. It’s basically making sure someone’s watching over what’s going on in your neighborhood.”
Anyone with information about the thefts can call Springfield police at (937) 324-7716.
