Audit shows accounting errors at Greenon schools

ENON — A state audit released today, March 4, showed several errors in how the Greenon Local School District collected and recorded money for athletic events, including a theft of nearly $3,000 that went unnoticed for some time.

The report, from Ohio Auditor Mary Taylor’s office, reported the district sold season passes for home football games from Aug. 20 to 25 in 2008 for $8,251. However, only $5,390 was deposited in the district’s account, resulting in a shortfall of $2,861.

“In summary, we believe the shortage in the deposit was a result of theft,” the audit states.

The audit also shows the district’s high school bookkeeper, who was responsible for collecting cash, writing receipts and depositing cash for athletic events, was overwhelmed because of a last-minute decision to sell season passes to events during the first week of school.

The audit also noted she should not be held personally responsible for the accounting issues and the missing money.

Among the recommendations, the audit argues that the district should make deposits in a timely manner, complete all parts of ticket receipts and issue pre-numbered season passes.

Dawn Weller, treasurer for the district, said the bookkeeper believed the financial records were balanced, and the audit was not discovered until about a year after the incident. She said district officials reviewed the records extensively after discovering the discrepancy, and were eventually led to the conclusion that the cash must have been taken.

She said the bookkeeper was trying to keep track of about $10,000 in cash in a five-day period, which is very unusual.

“It’s a great amount of money to deal with in such a short period of time,” Weller said.

She said the district is now doing a better job of making sure that cash is deposited in the bank one business day after receiving the money.

Marsha sure is quick to defend the coaches but why did she not mention the wife of the coach sitting on the school board with a lawsuit pending against Greenon Local SD. I think that is a conflict of interest. I do not remember her saying during the campaign that as soon as she was sworn in she would file a lawsuit. We do not need people like her on our board. She is taking money from our kids to defend her guilty husband. Please step down.If you had been honest you would not have been elected

The comment about frivolous lawsuits was right on track. Marsha was off-base when she brought up the coach's case, because sadly that isn't what is currently going on. Our union leadership is priding herself in filing lawsuits and grievances against our board every chance she gets, which of course costs the board money in defense costs. One might think she wants to bankrupt our district. And yes, I would think both Marsha and Barb should have been teaching and not commenting on the computer.....

Wow...what else can you say after reading all that garbage? I proudly went to Greenon schools then I chose to raise my children in this district. I have been happy with that decision. We've encountered wonderful teachers, administrators and support staff. Until now, I have remained proud of my hometown and their schools. Today I am ashamed and glad my children will graduate soon. Thanks to the internet age, you can all voice your stupidity here and make our district look ignorant.
