SPRINGFIELD — A man was arrested after allegedly confronting a neighbor while he had a baby in one hand and a shotgun in the other.
Michael Chaney, 28, of 1019 Wayne Ave. in Springfield, was charged with felony unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance for allegedly having a sawed-off 16-gauge Winchester shotgun. It is illegal to reduce the size of a gun’s barrel under the legal limits.
He’s also facing misdemeanor child endangering and drug possession charges.
According to Springfield police, Chaney got into an argument with a neighbor over a car stereo Sunday morning on Wayne Avenue. He then allegedly went into his house and came back out with his 1-year-old son in one hand and a shotgun in the other. A neighbor called 911 when he heard the shouting.
When officers arrived on scene, Chaney had placed the child in a car out front and left the shotgun on the coffee table. They found it loaded with two rounds. Also inside, police reported finding a large hunting knife and what appeared to be a container with marijuana within the child’s reach.
Chaney denied pointing the shotgun at the neighbor, but admitted to fighting with him in the street, according to the police report.
He was booked into the Clark County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. today in Clark County Municipal Court.
