Witness: Assault victim ‘bloody and unconscious’

Police are investigating an incident tonight in which a man was unconscious after an apparent assault.

Springfield police and medics responded at approximately 8:34p.m. to the 1600 block of Lexington Avenue.

The man, reported to be in his 50s, was unresponsive and taken by life squad to Springfield Regional Medical Center, according to Springfield Lt. Jeff Meyer.

Neighbor Melissa Mercer tells News Center 7 she and her husband found the victim “bloody and unconscious” at the corner of Baldwin and Sheridan avenues.

“They put him in a pick up truck to take him home, but they couldn’t get him to wake up so they called a squad,” Mercer said.

At 10:30 p.m., Lt. Meyer said investigating officers were at the hospital awaiting the outcome of X-ray imaging tests.
