Suspect in Springfield killing captured

Derrick Clerk, 25, was arrested in Michigan by U.S. Marshals.

Springfield police said a man who’s been on the run since an October shooting that killed a 19-year-old Springfield man has been caught.

Derrick Clerk, 25, of Springfield, was arrested over the weekend in Detroit by U.S. Marshals, said Springfield Police Sgt. Jeff Flores.

Springfield Police Division detectives issued a warrant on a charge of murder in Clerk’s name just one day after the shooting death of 19-year-old Shaquan Newby last October, according to court records.

Newby was found dead on Oct. 22 in the front yard of a home on South Yellow Springs Street. He had been shot at least once, according to court records.

Witnesses at the scene of the shooting told detectives that Clerk and Newby appeared to get into an argument before shots were fired, according to court records.

At the time of the shooting, Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody told this news outlet witness cooperation in the case helped quickly lead detectives to their suspect, Clerk.

Police said Clerk fled the Springfield area after the shooting and was considered armed and dangerous.

Other charges related to the capture of Clerk in Detroit are unknown, Flores said.

Springfield police are awaiting information on when Clerk will be extradited back to Clark County to face charges in court, police said.
