Springfield police pepper spray man accused of assaulting roommate

A Springfield man is facing assault charges after he allegedly slapped and choked his roommate, according to a police report.

Zachary G. Berry, 29, is being charged with assault and resisting arrest, according to jail records. He pleaded not guilty in the Clark County Municipal Court today.

Springfield Police Division officers were sent to a home in the 2000 block of Prospect Circle about an assault at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The victim told police his roommate, Berry, had allegedly been drinking and fighting with him all day.

The victim told police Berry lives in the basement while he lives on the ground floor. The victim was watching TV Sunday evening when his roommate slapped him across the face and then choked him. Berry also allegedly hit the man in the ribs with the handle of a knife, the report said. The victim declined to medical treatment, but wanted to press charges.

Officers attempted to arrest Berry, but he refused to comply and began screaming at officers. Berry was eventually taken to the ground by police officers, but continued to resist, the report said. Officers used pepper spray to place Berry in handcuffs, the report said.
