Springfield man gets life with possible parole in child rape case

A Springfield man received a life sentence Friday with the possibility of parole after 15 years on child rape charges.

Dustin Lee Camp, 23, had originally been charged with rape, gross sexual imposition and four counts of pandering sexually oriented material. The child pornography charges were dismissed as part of a plea bargain.

He was accused of sexually abusing of a child younger than 2.

Camp allegedly downloaded and sent child pornography images, according to a Clark County Sheriff’s Office report. Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Andrew Picek said it’s alleged he took pictures of the young girl and posted them online.

The tip originally came from Google in February, deputies said in a report. Google has software that detects inappropriate images, Picek said.

Camp’s actions were wrong and deserved punishment, Picek said.

“This is a crime where it goes without saying that the conduct he engaged in is vile and disgusting and absolutely nobody in society has any tolerance for,” he said.

Given the circumstances, Picek said the prosecutor’s office hopes he serves many years behind bars.

“Our hope would be given the nature of these offenses and the very young age of the victim, that parole is very slim or basically never happens in this case,” Picek.

He had originally pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, according to court records, but was found competent to stand trial in June. He then entered a guilty plea on July 6, according to court records.

“He was evaluated for competency but there was nothing significant or relevant in the report,” Picek said.
