School security increased following threat

Belmont High School on Monday had additional school security resource officers on the premises and Dayton police officers regularly patrolling the parking lots after a female student last week allegedly threatened to kill another student and blow up the school.

The 15-year-old ninth-grader was arrested at the 2615 Wayne Ave. school Friday afternoon on suspicion of misdemeanor menacing and inducing panic for the alleged threats, which were found written on a restroom wall Thursday afternoon.

The girl has been suspended for the maximum 10 days with a recommendation for expulsion, Dayton Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Mobereley said.

Principal Kenneth Kraemer sent home letters to parents Monday telling them what happened and what additional security measures were being taken this week.

“This additional security will continue for the next few days,” Kraemer said in the letter. “All threats to our school or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. We wanted you to have the facts so you can discuss them with your child and emphasize the seriousness of the issue.”

Belmont school leaders and officials with the district’s Office of Safety and Security worked closely with police Friday to identify the student and make the arrest, Moberley said.
