Questions remain in 74-year-old Springfield woman found dead in lake

Clark County investigators have still several questions in the death of a 74-year-old woman who was found in C.J. Brown Reservoir in Buck Creek State Park.

Eloise Briggs and her SUV were pulled out of the lake Monday morning. She had been missing since Saturday afternoon.

At this point, investigators don’t believe she had any kind of dementia, said Lt. Chris Clark of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, and they’ve found no signs of foul play. She also didn’t make any kinds of threats about harming herself that Clark’s seen.

“The coroner’s office hasn’t made a determination yet if it was a suicide attempt or an accident … At this point we don’t have enough information to make that determination,” Clark said.

It’s also unknown how long Briggs might have been in the water, he said. It will likely be several weeks for the coroner’s office to complete its investigation.

While there’s been drownings at the reservoir before, Clark couldn’t remember another case where someone appeared to have died in this manner.

Detectives were led to Buck Creek State Park after a woman saw an alert issued for Briggs while she was missing and the description of her car matched a video she had seen on SnapChat of a vehicle in the reservoir.

Deputies were working to track down the original poster of the video to the social media network, Clark said.

He encouraged anyone who sees something unusual, to report it right away.

“It goes back to if you see something, say something,” Clark said. “A car sitting in the middle of the C.J. Brown Reservoir is not something you’d normally see every day. If you see it, call us and we’ll come out and investigate. It might be something normal like car parts but it might not.”
