Police in Montgomery told WSFA that a boy, also a student, was in custody after the shooting was reported just after 3 p.m. CDT outside Robert E. Lee High School.

Montgomery police spokeswoman Capt. Regina Duckett told WSFA that the shooting took place “in an open field” near the school. A bullet flew onto school grounds and hit an unidentified female student, police said.

The girl was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. By 4 p.m. CDT she was in critical but stable condition, according to WSFA.

School district officials at the scene of the shooting shared condolences and well-wishes for the injured student, WNCF reported. They declined to release additional information as authorities investigate.

Charges against the boy apprehended after the shooting, who has not been identified, are pending, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.
