Have you been scammed? Police seek tips on wheelchair charity incident

Detectives want to know if southwest Ohio residents have been scammed by a person claiming to collect money for a wheelchair basketball charity.

Huber Heights detectives are investigating a man arrested Friday after a Rural King manager stated a male in the store’s lobby was soliciting for the Columbus Wheelchair Basketball Club. The club’s president, police said, confirmed the man was not authorized to collect for the club.

Detectives said he has solicited at other retail locations, as well, including the Lebanon Rural King.

The arrested individual, Clifton Campbell, 38, has felony detainers from Indiana and Texas, according to Montgomery County Jail records. Police on Monday said he is in custody awaiting formal charges from the Montgomery County Prosecutors Office.

Police said the male was in possession of several fake documents for the Columbus club, as well as the Atlanta Wheelchair Basketball Club documents and a fraudulent California drivers license.

Huber Heights Police Division seeks tips from individuals that may have been scammed, no matter the amount. Contact Detective James Gebhart at 937-237-3594.
