Clark county grand jury indicts man on attempted murder charge

A Clark County Grand Jury has indicted a Springfield man on a charge of attempted murder after police alleged he shot a man several times.

Curtis Long, 55, was also indicted on charges of felonious assault and having weapons under disability.

Springfield Police Division officers responded to the 1400 block of Woodward Avenue early on Jan. 10 to a report that someone had been shot. Officers found Jaryld Portis, 44, in a front yard with multiple gunshot wounds, according to court records.

Portis told officers it was Long who shot him, court records say. He also said Long was a family friend he’s known for many years.

The grand jury that met Tuesday also indicted an Urbana man for rape and gross sexual imposition.

Fred Markel, 59, is accused of having sex with a woman who has developmental disabilities.

Clark County Sheriff’s Office detectives alleged in the summer of 2016, he made the victim and her boyfriend, who also has developmentally disabilities, have sex in front of him at their home in Clark County, according to court records.

Markel also had sex with her at his home at least twice, deputies alleged in court records.

The woman has a low IQ, moderate mental capacity and makes decisions based on what other people tell her to do, the court records say.

A grand jury also returned the following indictments:

Timothy E. Smith, 34, Bradford, Ohio: Aggravated possession of drugs.

Dalton Huffman, 26, 3425 Michael Drive, New Carlisle: Aggravated possession of drugs.

Donald Allen Bowshier, 31, 508 N. Rice St.: Failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer.

Jeremiah Staup, 37: Theft.

Melissa McQueen, 32, 4535 Comanchee Trail, Jamestown: Theft and medicaid eligibility fraud.

Brittany Gail McLaughlin, 26, 1060 S. High St., Urbana: Theft.

Ethan Todd Salyer, 24, 1511 Edgewood Ave.: Aggravated Burglary and felonious assault.

Ronald Lee Moore, 47, 2125 S Tecumseh Road, Apt. 122: Two counts of attempted burglary and two counts of theft.

Nathaniel David Compston, 30, 2333 Northmoor Drive: Four counts of violation of a protection order.

Catherine Bowen, 35, 53 W. Elm St, Cedarville: Theft.
