An inmate who died while being held at the Montgomery County Jail was a Graham High School graduate, family members said.

Dillon Abplanalp, 28, was found unresponsive in his cell at the jail early Monday morning, following what is believed to be a medical emergency.

His parents, who were former residents of the village of St. Paris and currently reside in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., said they adopted Abplanalp when he was 3 years old. He moved with the family to Florida, but returned to the Dayton region some time later. His mother, Andrea Wright, said during his time in Florida, he stayed clean and worked construction jobs.

“He had a big, big personality,” she said.

Maj. Matt Haines, the administrator of the Montgomery County Jail, said Abplanalp could not be revived by Dayton Fire Department EMS crews after he was found during a wellness check and was pronounced dead a short time later by the county coroner. He said Abplanalp had been moved to a first floor cell by himself a day or so earlier for better treatment of a medical condition, but he has no reason to believe the death was caused by an overdose.

“There was nothing in there that made it look like a suspicious death,” Haines said.

An autopsy to find Abplanalp’s cause of death is still pending and could take up to 10 weeks, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Abplanalp was arrested after being found unresponsive in a McDonald’s drive-thru lane in Moraine on Jan. 14. A search of both him and his vehicle turned up at total of 38 syringes, 12 grams of heroin and a stolen handgun. He was being held on several charges, including drug possession, receiving stolen property and driving without a license.

Wright said Abplanalp leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, and funeral services are pending.
