Champaign County still investigating likely attempted murder-suicide

Champaign County Deputies continue to investigate a shooting on New Year’s Eve and said they’re looking at it as an attempted murder-suicide, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Officers were dispatched to a home in the 9800 block of Loveless Road in Mechanicsburg on the report of a gunshot wound about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, the officers reported an active shooter situation, according to scanner traffic. Shortly afterward, they relayed the situation was contained.

According to the report, Joe Hooper, 51, shot his wife Pamelia Hooper, 48, before killing himself.

Two guns were recovered from the scene, the report indicated.

Pamelia Hooper was taken to the intensive care at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Detective Ryan Black with the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office confirmed she remains in the hospital, however her condition couldn’t be released.

He also said detectives are still waiting to speak with the victim to learn more about the shooting.

“A follow up will be conducted with the victim of course but at this time that is all the information that we have and that can be released,” Black said.
