Want to be a smarter consumer in 2013? Here’s how

By John North

With the new year two days away, it’s never too late to prepare yourself to be a better consumer in 2013.

The new year brings new challenges, including ways con artists are trying to separate you from your money. Your Better Business Bureau offers tips to keep you safe and smarter with your money in the new year.

According to the U.S. Federal Reserve, Americans have more than $793 billion in credit card debt. The average household has almost $16,000 in credit card debt and $54,000 in debt total. Many people will do anything to get out of debt, sometimes falling for scams therefore digging themselves deeper into debt.

Your Better Business Bureau offers these tips:

• Make a budget and stick to it. Review your spending habits and figure out what you can do with or without.

• Never give out personal information. Keep credit card, bank account and social security numbers to yourself. Verify requests for this information with organizations before giving it out.

• Get everything in writing. This includes contracts from contractors, warranties/guarantees, oral promises, etc. Don’t sign anything until it’s carefully looked over.

• Comparison shop to find the best deal.

• Beware of unsolicited notifications claiming you’ve won money or a prize. Never cash a check sent to you asking you to cash or deposit it and wire money to the sender. These checks are usually counterfeit.

• Avoid work-at-home offers. They claim to bring big profits and offer no experience to do so. Trustworthy companies won’t charge you for materials, training or recruiting.

• Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. Reputable businesses will give you plenty of time to make a decision when purchasing or making a donation.

• Don’t be afraid to say no. If you’re not getting the answers you’re looking for, just cut off contact with that person or business.

Remember, always start with trust before doing business with unfamiliar companies. You can contact your BBB for a list of BBB Accredited Businesses and reviews on ones you’re planning to use. Go online to www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 or (800) 776-5301.
