Miami Valley Hospital South’s new $20 million Comprehensive Cancer Center is nearing completion and the hospital expects to begin admitting patients as early as Jan. 24, officials said Wednesday during a tour of the facility.

The five-story, 93,000-square-foot building on the hospital’s Centerville campus will join a new patient tower completed in March and maternity center finished in August at a combined cost of $51 million.

The cancer center will house a conference room and resource library, labs on each floor and a concrete enclosed vault room with a state-of-the-art linear accelerator that provides precision radiation treatments for cancer patients.

“This is the first technology of its kind in this (Dayton) area,” said Elizabeth Koelker, administrative director of oncology. “With this machine, we’ll be able to deliver a stronger dose with more precision at quicker intervals.”

The cancer center also has a recovery area designed to steep patients in a serene environment. It overlooks a “healing garden” designed to provide visual relief for cancer patients as well as the community at large, staff and visitors.

The cancer center’s primary objective is to provide a central location for treatment and recovery, said Joann Ringer, chief operating officer for Miami Valley Hospital, which is owned by Premier Health Partners.

“The main thing we’re doing here is creating one place for everything,” Ringer said.
