Macy’ sales up; Bon-Ton hit hard by storms

Department-store chain Macy’s Inc. said Thursday its February sales climbed, while The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. recorded a sales decline during the month, the latter’s results weighed down by snowstorms.

Cincinnati-based Macy’s said Thursday its sales grew to $1.8 billion during the four weeks ending Feb. 26, compared to $1.7 billion during the year-ago period, a 5.9 percent hike.

Additionally, the Cincinnati-based retailer reported sales at stores open more than a year climbed 5.8 percent during the month. The retailer has anchor stores at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek and the Dayton Mall in Miami Twp.

Macy’s common stock (NYSE: M) recently were trading at $23.84, up 25 cents. The stock has a 52-week range of $16.93 and $26.32.

During the same period, Bon-Ton, parent of Elder-Beerman Stores Corp., said total sales during the period fell 1.1 percent to $197.7 million during the period, compared with $199.9 million for the same period a year earlier.

Sales for stores open at least a year fell 0.5 percent during the period, Bon-Ton officials said.

Shares of Bon-Ton (Nasdaq: BONT) fell to $15.49, down 24 cents, a 1.5 percent decline. The stock has a 52-week range of $6.08 and $18.63.
