Local crops slow to develop, but in good shape

Staff Report

Cool weather is slowing the development of Ohio’s corn and soybean crops, according to Ohio State University Extension.

As of Sunday, July 19, 33 percent of the state’s corn crop had silked, or tasseled, compared to an average of 50 percent over the previous five years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. However, development is ahead of last year’s crop, which was 27 percent tasseled three weeks into July.

Meanwhile, 51 percent of the state’s soybean crop has bloomed, compared to an average of 65 percent over the previous five years and 48 percent last year.

Still, the crops are in good shape — 74 percent of the state’s corn crop is in good or excellent condition, compared to 63 percent in good or excellent condition last year. As for soybeans, 69 percent are in good or excellent condition, compared to 53 percent last year.
