Just 2 percent of corn planted as wet spell persists

Staff Report

Farmers are falling further behind in their spring planting as a prolonged wet spell persists across Ohio, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

As of Sunday, farmers had planted only 2 percent of their corn crop. That compares with 74 percent planted at this time last year, and the five-year average (2006-2010) of 54 percent.

Nationwide, 13 percent of the corn crop had been planted as of Sunday.

Since April 1, only 5.5 days have been suitable for fieldwork in Ohio, compared to 23.2 days last year and the five-year average of 18.7 days.
