Hospitals claim $2.9B net benefit for Ohio

Staff Report

The Ohio Hospital Association said Tuesday it provided a net total of $2.9 billion in free and discounted services in 2009, the most recent year for which data are available.

That total included $1.09 billion in charity care, $1.35 billion in community benefit activities, and $1.13 billion in Medicaid losses, minus $645 million in HCAP and Medicare DSH reimbursements.

OHA said charity care increased 9 percent in 2009 from 2008, surpassing $1 billion for the first time.

OHA also said the $2.9 billion total doesn’t include $625.4 million in bad debt and $711 million in Medicare losses.

The 2009 total is included in OHA’s 2011 statewide community benefit report. It is based on data provided by 169 hospitals throughout Ohio.
