Harvest far ahead of schedule, nearly finished

Staff Report

Farmers have nearly finished their harvest of soybeans and corn, and are on pace to put away their combines far earlier than usual.

Through Sunday, Oct. 31, farmers had harvested 91 percent of the state’s corn crop, compared to 23 percent at the end of October 2009 and the five-year average of 50 percent.

Meanwhile, 97 percent of the soybean crop had been harvested, compared to 81 percent at the end of October 2009 and the five-year average of 85 percent.

Farmers have been able to finish harvesting early this year because of dry weather.

Based on Oct. 1 conditions, Ohio’s corn crop is expected to yield 167 bushels per acre, seven acres shy of the record yield of 174 bushels in 2009. Soybean yields, meanwhile, are expected to be 48 bushels per acre, just one bushel shy of the record 49 bushels per acre, also set in 2009.
