Request bids from at least three air conditioning companies detailing the work to be done, materials needed, cost and payment terms. Consider reputation, years of service and services provided, as well as cost. Make sure the company is licensed, bonded and insured and have it pull any necessary city or county permits for inspections.

Be on the lookout for technicians who come to your home offering quick solutions and using misleading statements, high pressure or scare tactics to get you to agree to hire them. And, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion if large repairs are recommended.

Once you’ve decided on the right air conditioning company, get everything in writing, including the contract, warranty and guarantee. Don’t sign anything until you understand it and make sure all blanks are completed.
