Christmas travel tips for safety, avoiding rip-offs

By John North

Whether you’re hitting the roads or catching a flight this holiday season, try to stay calm and stress free. Your Better Business Bureau offers some tips to keep your holiday traveling safe.

According to AAA Miami Valley and a study by Global Insight (IHS), one in four Americans or 93.3 million people will be traveling this holiday season, a 1.6 percent increase from 2011. Ninety percent of all travelers will be traveling by car and air travel will see an increase of four and a half percent from 2011.

If you’re traveling by car, it’s always a good idea to have your car checked by a mechanic before you hit the road. Make sure you pack an emergency kit just in case something unexpected happens. If you’re making air travel plans, your BBB says if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always check out a company with your BBB to make sure you’re dealing with a trustworthy one before making any travel plans. So, to avoid being burned by scammers, do your homework and research your trip.

Your Better Business Bureau offers these holiday travel tips:

• Avoid flying or driving at peak travel times. Try to avoid traveling two days before or two days after Christmas.

• Make travel plans early. If you’re traveling by plane, make sure to get to the airport early to avoid long lines.

• Don’t wrap presents if boarding a plane. Packages may be opened for security purposes. Leave them unwrapped or ship them ahead of time.

• Watch out for deals that sound too good to be true.

• Get all your arrangements in writing.

• Always pay with a credit card because you can dispute the charges. Never pay with cash.

• Verify your reservations with the airline, hotel or car rental company directly before your trip.

• Ask lots of detailed questions.

Remember, always check out companies with your Better Business Bureau. Your BBB can provide lists of BBB Accredited travel agencies, mechanics, hotels or rental car services and business reviews on ones you’re considering. If you have any questions regarding holiday travel, you can always get help from your Better Business Bureau, visit www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 or (800) 776-5301.
