Businesses respond to bad rating, complaints

SPRINGFIELD — A week after the Better Business Bureau released a report listing area businesses with a high number of complaints, a few of those businesses are now working to improve their rating.

In a report released on Aug. 27, the BBB of Dayton and the Miami Valley released a report ranking 13 area businesses with a high number of complaints. Four Clark County businesses received an “F” rating, but at least two of those have since made contact with the BBB to resolve those complaints.

Allcare Dental and Dentures Inc., of Springfield, has already boosted its rating from an F to a B-plus, according to information on the BBB’s Web site. The company is a collection of dentist offices.

However, since the report, Allcare contacted representatives at the BBB and responded to many of the complaints, said John North, president and CEO of the local BBB.

Jim’s Tree Service, in Springfield, has also been in contact with the BBB since the report, North said.

Nationwide Tree Care, of Springfield and Paint Techs, of New Carlisle, have not been in contact with the BBB and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

“It does get some reaction,” North said of the annual report. “It gets a response from the business.”

North said once a complaint is filed and evaluated, the bureau will act as a go-between for the consumer and the company. Most cases are resolved fairly quickly, he said, and the organization can also recommend arbitration and mediation in a few of the cases. If the company does everything it can to resolve the complaint but the consumer disagrees, North said the BBB can also issue a finding in favor of the business.

Jim Johnson, owner of Jim’s Tree Service, said this is the first time his company has been listed on the report. He said he is working with the BBB to correct the issue. He’s been in business full-time for 10 years and this is the first time he’s been included on the list, he said.

According to the BBB’s Web site, the tree service had received 14 complaints in the last 36 months, and eight were closed in the last year.

Johnson said his business serves an average of six customers a day, seven days a week for 10 months each year.

“I’m going to try my best to get people taken care of,” Johnson said.
