Cougars, Warriors to meet in baseball sectional

SPRINGFIELD — Derek Toadvine's infield single with two outs in the seventh scored Dustin Gray from third to lift No. 1 seed Kenton Ridge over No. 11 seed Carroll 3-2 on Thursday, May 15, in a Division II sectional semifinal.
The Cougars (17-5) advance to face Northwestern on Saturday at a time and place to be announced.
Extras
Toadvine went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Starter Johnathan McDuffie and Tom Piatt, who entered the game in the fifth inning, held Carroll (6-16) to two hits.
In other sectional semifinal baseball action:
• Tyler Stephenson hit a three-run home run in the second inning and a two-run home run in the sixth to lead host Northwestern (20-8), the No. 4 seed, over No. 7 Bellefontaine 11-2.
Softball
Sally Coleman hit three triples and knocked in four runs to power No. 2 seed Triad (15-9) over visiting Fort Loramie 7-1 in a D-IV sectional semifinal.
In other sectional semifinal softball action:
• No. 2 seed Kenton Ridge (19-6) needed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to get past Bellefontaine 3-2.
Liz Mathews led the seventh off with a double and scored the winning run when a grounder by Allie Nicol to third base was thrown into the outfield.
• Sophomore Erica Roberts got her sixth shutout of the season and hit three doubles to lead host Warriors (24-4) past Ben Logan 6-0 in the D-II Urbana semifinals.
