Union to buy property for parking
Thursday, July 03, 2008
UNION — For years, the city staff of Union has wanted to expand the parking capacity for the Union Government Center, and with a purchase of land approved by City Council on Monday, June 23, that wish will soon be granted.
Acting under emergency measures, Council approved buying a property on which a small house rests just west of the water tower behind the Government Center at 112 N. Montgomery St. in Union.
The purchase of the property is not to exceed $37,000 according to Union City Manager John Applegate.
"We have received a Community Development Block Grant that will cover one-half of the purchase of the property," Applegate said.
Council Member Robin Perkins asked why it was deemed necessary to declare the action an emergency, which entailed waiving the second and third readings of Ordinance 1450 (which authorized the purchase).
Applegate responded that if the ordinance would have its three readings the authorization to purchase would not be available until sometime in September because Council will not meet for a second meeting in either July or August.
"The owner is expecting a quick closing," Applegate said.
The next meeting will be
7:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, at the Union Government Center, 119 N. Main St., Union.
