Springfield, Ohio — On Mother's Day one year ago, Dustin Krouse, 28, was deployed to Iraq.
He is stationed in Baghdad, serving with the U.S. Army military police.

His mother, Joanna Krouse, tries not to think about it.
"I thought I'd be addicted to CNN, but I have to close my eyes if I see anything about it," she said.
Worried, but proud of her son, Krouse says having her daughter-in-law and grandson close by is comforting.
"They moved here after he left, so that probably helps the most."
Although Krouse isn't able to talk with her son very often, she is thankful for modern technology.
"Almost everyday he'll at least text," she said. "Unless he's on a mission."
Krouse feels the government should offer more counseling to military servicemen and women. She is concerned about things her son may have seen happened in Iraq.
"He's seen people shot, he's been shot at," she said. "It's sad that maybe he's going to be different."
Krouse is expecting a phone call and flowers from Dustin for Mother's Day.
She proudly displays yellow ribbons at her home in support of Dustin, but wonders if there will ever be peace in Iraq.
"You know it snowed in Iraq for the first time, so anything is possible."
