to train tutors

The Champaign County Literacy Council is offering free training to individuals interested in becoming a volunteer tutor. Tutors will meet one-on-one with adults who want to improve their reading skills.

The training will be offered on May 3 and 10 at the Adult Basic Education building on the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center campus, 2280 Ohio 540 in Bellefontaine. Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided on both days.

Triad students to go to national contest

Two Triad High School students will be going to a national competition in Orlando, Fla., after winning at the state level for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Josh Olden and Thomas Nance, both juniors, presented a PowerPoint project they developed to teach Triad fourth-graders about nutrition and obesity. Their work was recently judged the best in the state at a FCCLA meeting in Columbus. The national competition will take place in July.

Art festival July 19 at Urbana square

The Art Affair on the Square will take place for the fourth year on July 19 in downtown Urbana. Work from more than 50 artists from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan will be offered. The event will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include performing arts, food and demonstrations.

Auditor issues tax deadline reminder

The Champaign County auditor is reminding residents who pay tangible personal property tax that the return due April 30 will be their final return. The 2008 personal property tax return will be the last to be filed because of tax reforms and a phase-out of the tangible personal property tax. Taxpayers will have a tangible property tax return filing requirement beginning in tax year 2009.
