United Way honors Suver at annual meeting

SPRINGFIELD — According to United Way Executive Director Doug Lineberger, "Heroes are people who help people.

"You don't have to be faster than a speeding bullet," he said.

He was explaining this to a roomful of United Way volunteers — which, using his own criteria, made the Courtyard by Marriott on Thursday, April 17, look like a meeting of the Justice League.

But even among heroes, there can only be one Man of Steel.

And at the annual meeting of the United Way of Clark, Champaign and Madison counties Thursday, Bob Suver only needed the cape.

Suver, the director of the Clark County Department of Job and Family Services, was inducted into the United Way hall of fame for more than two decades of help.

"I was a bit shocked," he said.

Not by the award — by how many years have passed since he started volunteering for the United Way.

"It's been 25-plus years," Suver said, "but it seems like it's been five years."

Suver went from working for his own office's United Way campaign to eventually leading the entire Clark County effort in 2004.

Speaking before he received the honor, Suver pointed to the roomful of volunteers and participating organizations to explain the United Way's importance.

"It's a conduit for volunteers across the spectrum to be involved in community issues," he said.

Other awards Thursday included the President's Award to volunteers Abby Cohn, Stacia Smith and Susan Young, and the Morrey Shifman Spirit of United Way Award to Assurant.
