MECHANICSBURG — A Mechanicsburg man died in a Columbus hospital this week after he was apparently assaulted outside a bar during the weekend, and family members are searching for clues in the case.

Police could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon, but Columbus media outlets reported Nickolas Foss, 29, of Mechanicsburg, died at Grant Hospital after he was injured in a fight outside a Columbus bar. Nick Foss was a 1997 graduate of Northeastern High School.

Chris Foss, Nick's brother, said they were outside the Gaswerks Bar in Columbus at 2 a.m. early Sunday morning.

He said Nick and a man they did not know had a few brief words outside the bar. As they left, Chris Foss said the man snuck up behind his brother and punched him, knocking him to the ground.

"It knocked him out when he fell back and he hit his head on the concrete," Chris Foss said.

Nick Foss eventually died at Grant Hospital in Columbus, the same hospital where he was working as a patient care technician in the coronary care unit.

Charles Foss, Nick's father and principal at Kenton Ridge High school, said Nick was working at the hospital while he was in training to become a registered nurse at the Chamberlain School of Nursing in Columbus.

He described his son as an outgoing man who chose nursing because he liked to help people. Because of Nick's wishes, the family donated his organs to the hospital, which will help about 200 individuals, his father said.

Nick, who played baseball and basketball in high school, had numerous hobbies. He was a movie buff, loved music, and followed Cleveland sports. He was also outgoing, and made friends everywhere he lived.

"If you were friends with him, you were his friend forever," Charles Foss said. "There was nothing fake about him."

Family members are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Columbus Police at (614) 645-4545 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 645-8477.
