Erotic poems saga: Assistant Principal Perkins resigns

Comment: Is Perkins' resignation good for the district?

Staff Writer

Friday, March 14, 2008

SPRINGFIELD — South High School Assistant Principal Karl Perkins has resigned over his writings of erotic poetry, which he acknowledged was "unbecoming to the teaching profession."

In a settlement reached with the district on Tuesday, March 11, Perkins' resignation is retroactive to Feb. 8. It includes a $20,800 buyout of a portion of his contract. The district also will pay his attorney,

Extras

Aaron G. Durden, $10,400.

The Springfield City Schools board of education unanimously accepted Perkins' resignation at its bi-weekly meeting on Thursday, March 13.

"Through his attorney (Perkins) approached the district about a resignation," board president Donna Picklesimer said. "It was in the best interest of the

district, going forward, to accept his

resignation."

Perkins, 33, was under contract with the district through the 2008-09 school year.

Perkins signed the settlement agreement on Tuesday — almost a month after it was discovered he authored a book of poems under the pseudonym Antonio Love titled "Love Songs and Sex Versus, Vol. 1."

The poems contained sexually-explicit material that were downloaded from a Web site by a student.

Perkins said Tuesday that he was doing "so well" and thanked students again for their support.

Many of those students protested in support of Perkins on Feb. 17, a week after the district started investigating his writings.

Perkins' personnel file contained no other instance of alleged misconduct in his two years as an administrator with the district.

I’m sure Mr. Perkins’ resignation will prove to be a tremendous loss to the district. He is an excellent educator, and the students will suffer in the loss of his guidance. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but those of you who used this forum to take “pot shots” at Mr. Perkins are deplorable. If you don’t have anything constructive to say, keep it to yourselves MORONS (Oh, sorry, was that a “pot shot”?)

By Enough Already

No,his resignation was NOT good for the district,as I’m sure time will tell. He should have never been disciplined in the matter. It just served as a means for people to unfairly judge him. If you have a problem with erotic poetry - DON’T READ IT. It is poetry, fiction, creative expression; it has nothing to do with the man’s character or morals. Also, don’t blame Mr. Perkins if you don’t monitor your children’s web activities.

You don’t cause someone this much grief for writing poetry.

Someone please check the list of poets who are in David Lehman’s anthology “The Best American Erotic Poems”

http://www.simonsays.com/content/book.cfm?tab=1&pid=591349&agid=3

It begin with Francis Scott Key who wrote our national anthem.

It is the School Board that needs to resign now.

Keep writing, Karl Perkins, and keep dedicating yourself to education.

MY SON IS A STUDENT @ SOUTH AND HE VERY PROUDLY SIGNED THE PETITION TO HAVE MR PERKINS REINSTATED! THAT MAN HAS THE RIGHT TO HAVE A LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL. I AM SURE ALL OF YOU DO WITH YOUR JOBS!?! AS LONG AS IT WASNT INTERFEARING WITH HIS TEACHINGS OR HIS JOB THEN WHERE WAS THE PROBLEM AND WHERE DO ALL OF YOU GET THE RIGHT TO JUDGE? I THINK THE WHOLE SCHOOL BOARD IS JACKED UP, THE REAL PROBLEM IS HARPER BUT SHE IS STILL THERE WHILE THE REST OF THEM ARE DROPPING LIKE FLIES!!!!

I MYSELF FIND THIS ENTIRE SITUATION WITH MR PERKINS INCREDIBLY RIDICULOUS. MY SON IS A STUDENT AT SOUTH HIGH AND HE VERY PROUDLY SIGNED THE PETITION TO HAVE MR PERKINS REINSTATED!! YES I BELIEVE THAT TEACHERS SHOULD BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD, BUT MR PERKINS IS AND WAS ENTITLED TO HAVE HIS OWN PERSONAL LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL. HE DID NOTHING TO BRING HIS “PERSONAL LIFE” INTO THE SCHOOL AND INTERFEAR WITH THE STUDENTS!!!

The student who has access to this website…why did his parents allow him to access it if this indeed was so explicit and horrible.

Excuse me? How dare the Board of Education spend MY tax money to buy his contract out and pay for his lawyer for a total of over $30,000 and then have to make cuts to get within budget?

What the heck is that all about? Someone owes the taxpayers an explanation as to how that lawyer could have possible accrued $10,000 in charges in less than 3 weeks.

SCOTT No I do not make my self out to be of a higher moral authority, but I do have high moral standards, I consider it a professional responsibility. Don’t you want the teachers who work with your children everyday to be of high moral standing? Are you aware that there is a morals clause in our state licenses? I believe that people should set the bar high for their children’s teachers, professionally, educationally, and morally.

Why are we blaming someone for exercising freedom of speech? Clearly his “poetry” was not intended for students in the district, nor was he writing under the name he is known by in the district. If we don’t agree with you even if we’re wrong, we will find enough people who agree to tar and feather you and hang you from the highest tree. It is also an example of stupid judgemental behavior. I hope the community sees how unfair the treatment of Mr Perkins has been. Investigation?? Now thats funny. The police have already investigated the other prinicipal and caught him red handed. What was the result of that investigation? He was moved to another school to steal medicine from those student and was caught again. Investigate the SCS Human Resources Dept allowing things like this to continue to happen. But if you write a book your an idiot and you should be fired and ran out of town.

I do not agree with the SCS board decision to dismiss Karl Perkins from his position. It sends a fearful message to educators that they are not allowed a private life. If this vote and action sets a precedence, then expect more teachers and educators will be ousted for simply having a hobby. What about teachers who gamble online? What about teachers who attend happy hours, wine tastings, brew beers in their basements? Are teachers allowed to do online dating? Where is the limit?

I’m starting to think the people who call us dumb redneck hicks without the sense God gave us might be onto something.

I wish Mr. Perkins hadn’t cut a deal, but I can’t really blame him. I wouldn’t want to work in that kind of environment either. Unfortunately, now the school district (and more importantly, the legal system) won’t have to deal with privacy rights of educators.

Well, at least not until the next teacher does something in harmless for people to get outraged about.

Since when does being a teacher hold you to a higher moral authority than the rest of us? Would it have been ok if I wrote the poetry and a student brought it to school. Would you be calling for my job as well. Freedom of Speech is Freedom of Speech no matter who you happen to be!!

Sweet- You are the dummy if you think that “either is correct.” Also, I think that you give the poet far too much credit. Using the Latin origin of “verse” as a substitute does not make sense, especially because “versus” literally means “turning”, which is absurd considering the context in which it is used. I think it’s more likely that the poet is a bad speller, rather than a brilliant etymologist with no skill in basic grammer.

foster - your comparison of this situation to the US govt’s trial of the Rosenbergs is non-sensical. I took your post to mean that Mr. Perkins was treated unfairly. Considering your use of the Rosenbergs as an analogy, one may properly conclude that you also believe the Rosenbergs were treated unfairly. Therefore, I concluded that you must sympathize with their Soviet benefactors. My conclusion was valid— or your post was the result of intellectual laziness or some other mental deficiency.

When you become an educator you are held to a higher standard. Any school board would examine and dismiss on this issue, as an expectation of the community. Sex related issues are always judged by the community expectations in different ways. The first admendment protects freedom of speech but does not protect teachers / administrators from not exercising good moral values. I feel the board acted as they should.

Scott, I have to disagree with you on a couple of things. Yes, our freedom of speech is vitally important, but when it involved a child who downloaded the erotic poetry and brought it to school, then it became inappropriate and unprofessional. If he hadn’t associated his name and picture with his pen name, there wouldn’t have been an issue. I don’t think it’s the liberals, how about the bible thumping conservatives that have a moral issue with the poetry.

By Scott

March 14, 2008 10:29 AM | Link to this

What Mr. Perkins did does not affect his ability to do his job and did not endanger the students he is paid to administrate. Once again the liberals of Springield feel it necessary to be judge and jury when Mr. Perkins is clearly protected by Freedom of Speech. Maybe the school board thought this issue would take the pressure off the current issues they have with their embroiled administrator. If I was Mr. Perkins I would sue them for every dime they have!!! This town is a joke.

If he truly meant to use the Latin, he should have spelled the entire title in Latin. You cannot convey an archaic meaning of a word when it is still in common usage for an entirely different thought concept. Then again, he’s not a real author.

I agree with Kevin K. Perkins published under a pseudonym to insure no students would read his poems. Like him, I would have (wrongly, as it turns out) believed that was adequate protection. Trouble is, kids are so internet-savvy these days, they can find anything. Regardless, no one should dictate what U.S. citizens can write in their free time.

He is a teacher…..he wrote a book…..because of his current profession and the fact the book had some explicit material, he used an alias so he would not embarrass the community….and has no history of misconduct. So next you’ll tell me that a springfield teacher was caught having sex in her home with her husband…..and her resignation is being asked for by the community…..gimmie a break!!

Good riddance Dr. Luv. Go to another depressed school district with a “diversified” super, and watch as the frilly panties run.

BYW - it’s “verses”, not “versus”. Must have been public school educated and have a B.S. degree in B.S.

Now let’s get rid of the other remora before we have to pay them off too.

Thank you Ed.
