Springfield High School is scheduled to open Sept. 8, 2008, Springfield City Schools Superintendent Jean Harper announced Thursday.

Harper said the date is based on information provided to the district by its general contractor, Ruscilli/Kapp Construction.

Setting the opening date is a much-anticipated benchmark in the development of the new school, Harper said.

"This is a question that a lot of people have asked, so now here is some finality," she said.

Harper said the start date will help officials move ahead with planning the calendar for the 2008-09 school year.

"This gives us a firm target," she said.

Having the start date also should alleviate concerns for the impact on other programs, such as athletics, she said.

Harper said several subcommittees will be put together to look at the next steps for putting the 2008 calendar together.

The new school is being built behind the current North High School, 701 E. Home Road.

In other business, the board approved the cumulative financial reports for January and heard a presentation on the Bio-Tech program at South High School.

Ok here i go again and i guess this is for MIKE. I’m sorry you feel that all the kids on the south side are trash. I guess that would include my son who lives with me on the south side of town, and may i add is an A B student has never had detention or got into any trouble in or out of school. Our kids need to learn to get along with people from all races and economic backrounds.Because one day my son who you say is “southside trash” just my be your childs boss.

It would have made a great wager if they would have asked the people of Springfield if they wanted to have one high school! I bet the answer would have been NO!
