'Bad News Bears': A square hit from Billy Bob Thornton

The remake of "Bad News Bears" so closely resembles the 1976 original it might as well be called "Double Play." Indeed, so much of the original screenplay remains that the 1976 film's writer, Bill Lancaster, shares credit for the new screenplay, even though he's been dead for eight years. Luckily, since the first film was great fun, and the new film boasts a strong cast, script and director, the remake is almost, if not quite as good as the original. Read the full review

READ THE REVIEW

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: C-
"Most of the humor comes from trying to be as raunchy as possible. True, the 1976 picture wasn't exactly angelic, but the stuff here is cruder, cheaper, more obvious."

Austin American-Statesman: 2 of 5 stars
"...a shoddy and superfluous copy."

Middletown Journal: B+
"The movie's home run is the casting of Thornton, who at least matches Walter Matthau's portrayal by giving Buttermaker the same world-weary crustiness that made him so funny in Bad Santa."

The Palm Beach Post: C+
"It would really help your enjoyment of this movie if you never saw the earlier one."

The Palm Beach Post "Flick Chick"
"Weird. Rude. Cute. Just like your kid."
