Walgreens will offer free blood glucose testing in conjunction with the Oprah Winfrey Show. The announcement will be made on today’s program, Thursday, Feb. 4. The show, which airs in the Miami Valley at 5 p.m. on WKEF, Channel 22, is a special episode devoted to the growing diabetes epidemic in this country.

The 24 Dayton women from Mt. Zion Church of God Holiness who attended the show taping on Jan. 14 are featured in the program and were pledged to secrecy about the surprise announcement.

All Walgreens 24 hour stores and Take Care Clinics will be offering free blood glucose testing on from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday Feb. 5. No appointment is necessary.

If you don’t live near a 24-hour Walgreens location or can’t get tested on Feb 5, you can still receive a free glucose test before Feb. 18. Visit Walgreens.com/diabetes for specific testing hours at a Walgreens near you where they will be accepting walk-ins during the next two weeks. You can also call 1-800-WALGREENS to make an appointment. The offer is valid through Feb. 18.

Oprah calls diabetes a “ticking time bomb.” “It’s a silent killer”, she says,” It’s annihilating the African-American community.”

Thank you for this article DDN! And thanks to Oprah too. This will save some people's lives and be an early warning to many others. You are appreciated for your service to the community!

It's not as if someone can't get checked at any number of places.

I happen to be a type 1 diabetic. I love to go to the free screenings right after I've eaten and watch how big their eyes get after testing me.
