Remember, it’s a good idea to have twice as many glasses as guests. Things break, and things get dirty, and a busy host doesn’t always have time to wash glasses midparty.
Shot: Don’t act like you don’t know. Also, handy to measure pouring amounts if you don’t have a jigger.
Cocktail: Meant for strong cocktails, particularly martinis, served cold and straight up, without ice.
Highball: Most commonly seen. Tall and narrow, meant to hold mixer-based liquor drinks (and, of course, ice). Popular examples: Gin and tonic, Long Island iced tea, screwdriver, vodka and cranberry.
Rocks: Or “old-fashioned glass,” meant for straight liquor served on the rocks. Think “Mad Men.”
