SPRINGFIELD — With the last days of North and South high schools quickly approaching, we wanted to find a way to bring back memories of the best athletes Springfield has produced since the schools opened in 1961 — and it sure wasn't easy.

It was like mowing grass with a pair of scissors, and we had to make some tough decisions. You may agree with us, you may not — but at least you're talking about the history of North and South.

The Top 10 female athletes from South and North were chosen based on their high school, college and professional careers. The selection was done by the Springfield News-Sun and a committee of distinguished school representatives.

Our top athletes —  1990 South graduate Nicole Green and 1984 North graduate Wynette "Nettie" Carter — were the embodiment of the selection process.

Carter, a three-sport athlete, starred on the basketball floor for both North and Wright State University, eventually landing in the Raiders' Athletic Hall of Fame.

Green, a track star, won several state championships before winning an NCAA national championship at Kansas State in 1994 and a gold medal at the 1995 World Track and Field Championships in Goteborg, Sweden.
