Springfield police are close to tracking down suspects in a robbery that wrecked a local jewelry store earlier this week.

While police have declined to release names or say whether any arrest has been made, they have made some progress in the case, according to Springfield Police Division Chief Stephen Moody.

Burglars broke into Rolfe's Jewelers May 19; they grabbed much of the store's merchandise and smashed shelves and display cases.

"We're still developing the case and it's still very active and very fluid," he said.

Police are aware that people in the Dayton and Springfield areas have purchased stolen jewelry, and they want those people to contact them about the case, Moody said. Individuals who decline to voluntarily turn themselves in could be arrested on charges of receiving stolen property, Moody said.

Store owner Steve Sahle said he still isn't sure exactly how much was stolen during the break-in.

He also said customers and a few jewelry suppliers have offered to help in various ways, and he has been working 12 hours each day to repair the business. He plans to reopen today, May 23.

"We're just trying to get the store back together and take inventory and see what we can do to get it open again," he said.

"Until you go through something like this, you never know," Sahle said.
