Tigers take sectional baseball crown

TIPP CITY — Senior Tyler Sigenthaler scored from second on an error in the top of the eighth inning to lift No. 2 seed West Liberty-Salem over No. 1 seed Tri-County North 3-2 in a Division III sectional final at Tippecanoe High School.

The Tigers (22-5) gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. They loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and had two outs when the error on a ground ball by Tyler Hayes allowed the winning run.

Levi Woodruff was 3-for-4 and Tyler Cordell was 2-for-4 for West Liberty-Salem. The Tigers will play the Cincinnati lower sectional champion at 10 a.m. May 24 at Centerville High School.

Softball

Brittany Markley was 2-for-3 as No. 3 seed Northeastern lost to No. 4 seed Milton-Union 1-0 in a D-III sectional final at Northmont High School. The Jets managed only four hits and fell to 19-10.

In other softball action:

• The Division III Northmont upper sectional final has been moved to 4 p.m. Monday, May 19. West Liberty-Salem will face the winner of the Dixie-Anna game, which will be played today, May 17.

Track

South junior Shanay Portis was named the female most valuable athlete for the Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division after three first-place finishes at the GWOC Championships at Springboro as South and North completed their last conference meet.

Portis set a meet record in the 100-meter dash in 12.14 seconds, breaking the record of 12.38 she set a year ago. She set a personal best in the 200 in 25.04 and rounded out her victories with a long-jump title (17 feet, 3¼ inches).

Seventeen teams competed. Portis also won the same events in Wednesday's Central Division meet.

Cassandra Lloyd finished first in the 100 hurdles (14.62) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.21).

Jaylene Barrien of North was fourth in the long jump (15-10½), and Rachel Richardson of South was sixth (15-5½).

South freshman Josh Bass was first in the long jump in the boys meet (21-0). Richard Quick of North won the discus (154-11).

Mario Troutman of North was second in the high jump (6-4). South's relay team was sixth in the 800 relay.
