SPRINGFIELD — Liz Mathews, the leadoff batter for the Kenton Ridge High School softball team, roped a shot to the fence and was soon on third base with a stand-up triple.
The throw from the outfield rolled all the way to the backstop, and Mathews scooted home.

One Cougars batter. One Cougars run.
It would be all Kenton Ridge would need Monday, May 12, in a pivotal Central Buckeye Conference game against Northwestern. Pitcher Ashley Legge allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and the Cougars didn't commit an error in a 2-0 win.
It was a big day in more ways than one for Kenton Ridge — the Cougars (17-6, 12-4 CBC) locked up the CBC Kenton Trail Division title on Senior Night against a Clark County rival.
Legge outdueled Northwestern hurler Erica Roberts in a matchup of two of county's better pitchers. Legge (15-6) tossed her fifth shutout.
KR second baseman Caitlin Moody recorded four assists and three putouts to lead the defensive effort.
"I thought it was going to be a game of what team committed the fewest mistakes," Kenton Ridge coach Ed Foulk said. "Both teams have real good pitchers, and they have a great team. I knew it was going to be a good game."
Northwestern committed five errors, including three in the Cougars' run-scoring first and sixth innings. Northwestern (22-4, 12-3 CBC Mad River) is one game behind division leader Indian Lake and lost a 14-game winning streak.
"We gave them the game," Northwestern coach Missy Johnson said. "We didn't play defense and our mind wasn't there. You can't win a ballgame with five errors. We basically gave them their runs."
The title is Kenton Ridge's fifth in the last seven years, and Monday's victory was No. 439 for Foulk. Does the winning ever get old?
"No," he said. "That's why I'm coming back again next year. I almost retired, but I've got another year."
