Randall gets 499 in season opener

Kenton Ridge veteran coach Tom Randall got his 499th career win without much worry.
The Cougars plated seven runs in the first inning, then cruised to a 16-3 season-opening high school baseball victory at Southeastern on Monday.
Weather permitting, KR will try to get win No. 500 for Randall at 5 p.m. today at North.
Ryan Mason had three hits and four RBIs. Cody Kaglic had five RBIs and Tyler Heskett added three hits for the Cougars.
In other baseball news:
• Jordan Moore, Dustin Borders, Justin Williams and Jake Ceyler each doubled for host North in an 8-3 victory over Northeastern.
• Freshman Jarrett Sparks cracked a three-run double in the top of the sixth to lead Cedarville over Yellow Springs 4-2.
• Luke Myers scored on a squeeze bunt by Josh Lightner in the ninth inning as Graham beat host Triad 8-7. Graham's Ryan Black got the win with five innings of relief. Ryan Thompson hit a 3-run homer for Triad.
• Junior Evan Petty went 3-for-4, cracked 2 home runs and drove in 5 runs as host Urbana outslugged Piqua 15-13.
Senior Ross Miller was 3-for-5 with a home run and double and drove in four for Urbana.
• Logan Link was 3-for-4 and Zach Ochs drove in four as West Liberty-Salem got a 13-6 win over host Greenon.
Softball
Tara West started the season off right, tossing a six-inning no-hitter and striking out nine, to lift Urbana past Franklin-Monroe 10-0. West, Maria Hendricks, Eliza Sherman and Brittney Lewis each had two hits.
In other softball action:
• Shawnee senior Mary Hamilton struck out 12 and went 2-for-4 as the Braves beat Southeastern 9-2.
Kelby Kittles was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs and Beth Stroupe was 2-for-3 for Shawnee. Darcie Muncy was 2-for-4 with a double for the Trojans.
• Graham rallied for three runs in the sixth, but the rally was short-lived as Triad scored twice in the bottom of the frame and held on for a 6-3 win.
• A run in the bottom of the fifth was the difference in a 2-1 Tecumseh loss to Sidney.
• Emily Kauffman and Ally Crawford combined for a perfect game as West Liberty-Salem crushed Greenon 22-0.
• Sarah Payton and Aimee Ary each went 5-for-5 as Cedarville whipped Yellow Springs 20-3.
Track and Field
Urbana's Nick Cobb won the 800 meters (2:08.38) and the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) as the Hillclimbers picked up their first win of the season at the Northwestern quad meet.
Nick Nelson won the 110 hurdles (17.93) and Clark Ladd won the 300 hurdles (44.83), while Will Barr won the discus (142-10) for the Hillclimbers.
Northwestern's Ben Jones won both the 1,600 (4:47) and the 3,200 (10:29). Jake Casto won the 100 (11.63) for the Warriors.
Northwestern's Kasey Hosier won the 1,600 (5:48) and the 3,200 (12:34) as the Warriors took home the girls team title.
Urbana's Amy Evans set a new stadium record in both the shot put (36-11) and discus (122-1). Jasmine Pickett, the defending D-II state champion in the long jump, won the event with a leap of 16-9. She also won the 200 (26.7) and the 400 (1:01.14).
Northwestern's Sara Kenny won the 100 (13.08).
